In Helsinki, the Six City Strategy develops and expands the ways in which economic development policy is implemented. Projects funded via the Six City Strategy have developed the City’s role as an innovation partner for companies. The project funding has strengthened the operations of local universities and supported the competence and employment opportunities of the city’s residents.
A significant proportion of the projects funded in Helsinki have increased the preparedness of City units to serve as experimentation and development environments as part of the product development processes of companies. Companies have been provided with experimentation opportunities in schools, street environments, City-owned properties and social and health care services, among others.
Companies’ product development work is supported by opening up the data resources produced by the City, centralising experimentation activities to certain city districts, such as Kalasatama and Jätkäsaari, and presenting companies with development challenges based on the City’s needs.
The Six City Strategy’s impact on Helsinki is being turned into a permanent operating model for platform-oriented business cooperation. The City wants to support product development work in innovative companies by offering experimentation opportunities in real environments and with the end-users of services. Having an experimentation process conducted in Helsinki as reference can open up export opportunities for companies.
Platform-oriented business cooperation helps companies and the City to develop products and services that can solve near future challenges related to mobility, learning and service housing, for example. The experiments conducted in the urban environment have a natural connection to the objectives of the Carbon-neutral Helsinki 2035 action plan, the implementation of which requires close cooperation between the City and companies.
The Six City Strategy has deepened cooperation between the Six Cities in regard to the utilisation of project funding, and allowed persons working on different types of content to network with one another. The Six City Strategy has been a valuable opportunity for Helsinki to learn about the experiences of other cities and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of development efforts through cooperation.
